We have compiled a list of the most expensive buildings worldwide. Here are our top ten:
1. Marina Bay Sands Resort.
Marina Bay Sands is a Singaporean resort developed by Las Vegas Sands, known as the world’s most expensive standalone casino property. The entire project cost $8 billion and includes a 2,561-room hotel, a 1,300,000-square-foot convention and exhibition center, an 800,000-square-foot mall, a museum, two theaters, 7 celebrity chef restaurants, an ice-skating rink, and the world’s largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines.
This resort, designed by Moshe Safdie Architects, opened in June 2010 after a delay from the original plan of opening in 2009. A two-day celebration marked the occasion, with the casino opening on April 17th earlier that year. The theatres began operating on November 30th, and other facilities also opened in the same year.
The project’s cost is estimated at $8.0 billion. Despite being challenging, the casino should generate at least $1 billion in annual profit. It attracts around 25,000 visitors daily. However, numbers aren’t the only impressive aspect of the resort.
Its design is also spectacular. The designer was initially inspired by card decks, resulting in a resort that integrates three hotel towers connected by the Skypark, which stands 200 meters high. Additionally, the resort boasts amazing gardens, housing 250 trees and 650 plants covering an area equivalent to three football fields.
2. The Emirates Palace.
The Emirates Palace is a luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was designed by architect John Elliott RIBA and cost 3.9 billion GBP to build. The hotel opened in November 2005, with some of the restaurants and spas opening in 2006.
The hotel occupies 850,000 square meters of floor space with an underground parking for 2,500 vehicles, a marina, and a helipad. It is the second most expensive hotel worldwide, offering 302 rooms, 92 suites, 16 Palace Suites, and 22 three-bedroom suites.
Some suites and rooms are furnished in gold and marble. The top floor contains six Ruler’s Suites reserved for Emirati royalty and dignitaries. The hotel also features the world’s most expensive Christmas tree valued at 11 million dollars.
The hotel took 3 years and $3 billion USD, with the assistance of 20,000 workers, to construct. Sitting on over 100 hectares, it boasts stunning gardens and 1.3 km of private beach. Additionally, there are two pools (for adventure and relaxation), multiple tennis, cricket, rugby, and soccer facilities, as well as fitness suites and a luxury spa.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is a luxury resort casino and hotel on the west side of the Las Vegas Strip. It opened on December 15, 2010, as a $3.9 billion project. It offers 2,995 hotel rooms, a 75,000 square foot casino, 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a 40,000 square foot spa and fitness facility.
Additionally, the resort features a 1,800 seat theater and 150,000 square feet of meeting space. It also has three pools: one for relaxation, a day club pool, and a nightclub pool.
The project was led by Friedmutter Group and collaborated with Arquitectonica, DeSimone Consulting Engineers, Prophet, Rockwell Group, Jeffrey Beers, Adam Tihany, and Bentel & Bentel. The resort was built on a Jockey Club parking lot.
The Cosmopolitan is the second Las Vegas hotel with an underground parking garage, which was built before the casino. Completed in 2007, the parking structure preceded the casino construction. In March 2010, the resort was renamed Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas due to trademark disputes.
Additionally, celebrity restaurants opened gradually, contributing to the resort’s impressive structure today.
The Wynn, a resort and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, is named after developer Steve Wynn. This $2.7 billion establishment spans 215 acres, with the hotel occupying 614 feet. Standing at 45 floors, the hotel boasts 2,716 rooms.
The resort features a 111,000 square foot casino, a 223,000 square foot convention center, and 76,000 square feet of retail space. In addition, the adjacent Encore hotel brings the total number of rooms in the Wynn resort complex to 4,750. Opened on April 28, 2005, it was the first resort to integrate a luxury car dealership showcasing brands like Ferrari and Maserati.
Positioned near the valet parking, guests can appreciate the showcased model cars while anticipating their own vehicles.
The cars aren’t the only attraction. There’s a Ferrari Store offering apparel, racing merchandise, electronics, and a home gym branded with the Ferrari logo. In addition, the resort includes the Wynn Golf Course, the only one on the Las Vegas Strip.
The hotel’s Tower Suites have 296 rooms with a private driveway, Rolls-Royce house cars, and a private entrance. In 2006, the resort celebrated its one-year anniversary and started construction on another hotel tower called Encore, a $2.3 billion project.
5. The Venetian Macao.
The Venetian Macao is a hotel and casino resort located on the Cotai Strip in Macau. Owned by the Las Vegas Sands corporation, this 40-story structure occupies 10,500,000 square feet of space. With a project cost of $2.4 billion, it became Asia’s largest single structure hotel building and the world’s 6th largest building.
Additionally, it boasts the world’s largest casino.
The resort was designed to resemble The Venetian in Las Vegas. The main hotel tower was completed in July 2007, and the resort officially opened on August 18th of that year. In total, the resort has 3000 suites, 1,200,000 square feet of convention space, and 1,600,000 square feet of retail space.
Additionally, there is 550,000 square feet of casino space with 3400 slot machines and 800 gambling tables, as well as a 15,000 seat arena for entertainment and sports events.
The casino is divided into four themed gaming areas: Golden Fish, Imperial House, Red Dragon, and Phoenix. The resort’s hotel also has the Paiza Club, which includes a gaming area divided into private rooms named after Asian cities and regions, like Yunnan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. The Venetian Arena hosts sports events like basketball, tennis, or boxing, as well as concerts and televised award shows.
We now move from resorts to family homes. Starting with the Antilia, the largest and most expensive family home ever built. Located in Mumbai, India, it has 27 stories and stands at 568 feet tall.
The Antilia boasts over 398,000 square feet of living space, making it a $1 billion investment for Mukesh Ambani and his family.
The project was a partnership between architecture firms Perkins+Will and Hirsch Bedner Associates. It took them 3 years to complete. The result was an oversized family home that could be confounded with a hotel. Inside, the structure contains a health club, gym, dance studio, swimming pool, ballroom, and guestrooms. On the ground floor, there is also a parking garage that can hold 160 vehicles.
The owners employed a staff of 600 people.
Even though the project initially described the building as the greenest structure in the world, covered in foliage and with similar features, the final result was very different. The building features a steel structure with no apparent green elements. However, it remains the biggest and most expensive private home in the world. Named after the mythical Atlantic island of Antilia, the building has nine elevators in the lobby, three helipads, and an air traffic control facility.
Additionally, it houses the world’s largest collection of antique sewing machines.
The Bellagio hotel and casino is located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Known for its fountains, it is owned by MGM Resorts International. It was built on the former site of the Dunes hotel and casino and was named after the town of Bellagio in Italy.
The element it’s most known for is the 8-acre lake between the building and the Strip. Here you can admire the Fountains of Bellagio, especially the one synchronized to music. Inside the hotel and casino, visitors enter a lobby with 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers covering 2,000 square feet of the ceiling.
The main tower has 3,015 rooms, 46 levels, and reaches a height of 508 square feet. To the south, there is the Spa Tower with 33 floors and a height of 392 square feet, housing a total of 935 rooms.
The Bellagio complex opened on October 15, 1998, with an $88 million ceremony. In 2000, Mirage Resorts merged with MGM Grand Inc. to become MGM Mirage. By 2010, the company had changed its name to MGM Resorts International. In 2006, the casino was remodeled, and in 2011, all 2,500 rooms in the main tower were upgraded.
The Fountains of Bellagio, a popular attraction, can be seen from various points on the Strip. The show occurs every 30 minutes during the day and every 15 minutes from 8 pm until midnight.
8. The Palazzo.
The Palazzo is a luxury casino and hotel resort located between the Wynn and The Venetian. It holds the record for the tallest building in Nevada. The resort was designed by Dallas-based HKS, Inc.
It offers the largest suites and guest rooms on the Las Vegas Strip (720 square feet per room).
Construction on the Palazzo began in February 2006, with significant time devoted to the underground parking space. By March 2007, the hotel’s elevator core was finished, and it was anticipated that at least 1,000 rooms would be available for guests by December of that year. The casino opened on December 30th, and the official grand opening of the Palazzo occurred on January 17th, 2008.
This building now boasts a total floor area of 6,948,980 square feet, making it the largest in the United States.
The Palazzo is a $1.8 billion resort. Guests are welcomed into a glass dome with a two-story fountain before entering the hotel. The hotel tower is 642 square feet high and has a total of 3,068 rooms and suites, including 375 concierge-level suites.
The Palazzo is the largest LEED certified building in the United States and the eleventh largest building in the world by floor space. It is also the second-largest building in the Western Hemisphere.
Taipei 101, the Taipei World Financial Center, is a skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan. It was once the world’s tallest building until the Burj Khalifa opened in Dubai. It is LEED Platinum certified, making it the tallest and largest green building globally.
Concise Version: The skyscraper, Taipei 101, was designed by C.Y. Lee & partners and completed in 2004. It has 101 floors and 5 underground levels. As a symbol of technology and Asian tradition, it’s built to withstand typhoons and earthquakes.
The Taipei Financial Center Corporation (TFCC) owns Taipei 101.
The building formerly held the record for the fastest elevator (16.83 m/s) and the largest countdown clock displayed on New Year’s Eve. Taipei 101 is also one of the most stable constructions. Its foundation is reinforced by 380 pillars driven 80 meters into the ground. In 2002, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake tested its stability and left it undamaged.
The building’s water recycling system meets 20 to 30 percent of its water needs, making it tall, imposing, sustainable, and eco-friendly. Another notable feature is a 660-metric-ton tuned mass damper that reduces movement caused by high winds by up to 40%.
Burj Khalifa, known as Burj Dubai, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It holds the record for the tallest man-made structure in the world, standing at 829.8 meters. Construction began on September 21, 2004, and it officially opened on January 4, 2010. The tower is located in Downtown Dubai, covering a 2 square km area.
Burj Khalifa was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago, at an estimated cost of US$1.5 billion.
Originally named Burj Dubai, the tower was later renamed Burj Khalifa to honor UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his crucial support during the project’s completion. The development includes 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 7.4 acres of parking space, 19 residential towers, and Dubai Mall. Burj Khalifa holds records for the tallest structure, the most floors, the highest elevator installation, and the world’s fastest elevator (18 m/s).
The building’s design incorporates regional cultural and historical elements. It has a Y-shaped plan and a triple lobed footprint inspired by the flower Hymenocallis. The tower consists of three elements organized around a central core.
Burj Khalifa also has 27 terraces. Outside the tower, a record-setting fountain system was designed. It was a US$217 million project by WET Design, the same company responsible for the Bellagio Fountains.
