The Restaurant and Bar Design Awards is an internationally recognized competition dedicated to bar and restaurant design. It attracts architects from all over the world, with over 500 entries in the past seven years. The 8th celebration of the event was held at the Old Truman Brewery in London on September 29, 2016.

The Best Overall Bar award this year went to Blue Wave designed by El Equipo Creativo. Located in Barcelona, Spain, the bar’s concept is centered around an authentic marine decor inspired by a breaking wave. Its proximity to water and strategic orientation are crucial for success.
German Gymnasium is the recipient of the Best Overall Restaurant award.
Conran & Partners were commissioned to redesign the German Gymnasium with a unique approach that would celebrate its history and bring it into the future. The building, constructed in 1864 in London for the German Gymnastic Society, retained many of its original architectural and design features, which were seamlessly integrated with contemporary additions.

Located in Ramsgate, UK, the Archive is a lifestyle store designed by Haptic Architects. It occupies a section of a double-story Victorian arch and the interior design is defined by Scandinavian influences. Inside the arch, there are pitched-roof structures made of birch plywood, which house functions like the children’s play space and bathrooms.
The furniture was locally-crafted and detailed by the designers.
Craft London is the collaboration between Stevie Perle and Tom Dixon from Design Research Studio. It’s a hybrid venue: a restaurant, cafe, cocktail bar, and shop. Here, you can find goods made using mostly British produce from local farmers.
The dedication to local goods is also seen in the interior design, which combines Scottish tweed, British limestone, and London-designed furniture and lighting fixtures.

Architect Lazaro Rosa Violan designed the restaurant, which also includes a bar and terrace.
Nando’s Harrogate, designed by STAC Architecture, won the Fast/Casual category.
Nando’s occupies a 1960’s building on Parliament Street in London. Designed by STAC Architecture, the studio focused on creating a polished industrial look with warm timber accents. The result is a hybrid design that is not too rough or fancy.
The restaurant features earth-colored walls, wooden tables, and custom-designed light fixtures that add color to the space. Nando’s Old Street, designed by Moreno Masey, is a multiple restaurant award winner.

With light-colored walls, simple tables, and comfortable seats, it welcomes guests with a warm atmosphere.
Tattu, located in Manchester, UK, is a restaurant inspired by body art. Designed by Edwin Pickett, the contemporary space is organized into three zones: a dining area on the first floor, a bar on the ground level, and a private Parlour.
The Printing Press is a bar and restaurant in the George Hotel in Edinburgh, UK. It was designed by Goddard Littlefair and can accommodate 92 people. The interior features oak wood, brass, ceramics, leather, velvet, glass, and marble, creating a unique and rich ambiance.
The Refinery is located at Reagent’s Place in London. It’s a great destination for both visitors and locals. Here you can enjoy a bar, restaurant, and al-fresco terrace designed by Fusion Design and Architecture.

Dacong’s Noodle House by Swimming Pool Studio – best ceiling.
Designing Dacong’s Noodle House in Shanghai, Swimming Pool Studio aimed to create a modern space with traditional features. The designers focused on the ceiling, constructing a complex and eye-catching 3D design using a simple cube shape made of wood. Complemented by low tables, benches, and themed wall decorations, the result is a visually stunning space.
When decorating a space like El Moro, which has been offering the best hot chocolate and churros in Mexico since 1935, it is crucial to grasp its unique identity and capture what makes it special. Cadena + Asociados accomplished this by first delving into the brand’s history to create a one-of-a-kind design. They incorporated classic wall tiles, stained glass windows, and an overall graphic and simplistic aesthetic.
Finding a memorable nightclub can be challenging. If an interesting and glamorous interior design is important to you, visit Flash club in Bansko, Bulgaria. Opened in 2015, it was designed by Studio MODE and has an impressive dark color theme.

In 2015, Generator Paris opened in the 10th arrondissement, occupying an 8-story office building transformed by Studio d’Architecture Ory & Associes in collaboration with DesignAgency. Like other Generator hostels, this one offers affordable accommodations in a prime location, characterized by vibrant colors and a homey décor. The Parisian hostel can accommodate up to 916 guests in shared, twin, and penthouse rooms, making it the largest Generator property to date.
The best pop-up this year was Kino, designed by Stonehill & Taylor, a studio in New York established in 1986. The studio has a collaborative approach and strives to create innovative design ideas for each project, working on a variety of projects from luxury hotels to prototype designs.

The Kitty Burns café in Abbotsford, Australia, was designed by Biasol Studio in 2015. It is situated below Melbourne’s iconic Skipping Girl and features a playful and fresh design. With a 6-meter high ceiling, the café is filled with natural light, giving it an open and welcoming feel.
Taiyo is a sushi restaurant in Milan, Italy. Designed by Maurizio Lai, its notable feature is the lighting. The space has a central area and two other rooms.
The ceiling is decorated with a geometric installation and the walls are covered with glass, metal, and wood. The lighting installations serve as both light sources and décor.
La Bona Sort by Jordi Ginabreda Studio is known for its excellent interior surface design.
Tapa’s La Bona Sort restaurant is located in an old house built in the 16th century in Barcelona, Spain. It resembles the traditional Catalan hostels with its large courtyard, attic, and stables. The interior design and courtyard of the restaurant were both updated by Jordi Ginabreda Studio.
The restaurant now occupies the former stables and extends into the courtyard, including a large, partially-covered terrace.
Thaikrun is a casual dining experience that brings the authenticity of Thai cuisine and culture to locations worldwide. The name Thaikrun is a combination of Thai and Khun, meaning “your Thailand.” It celebrates street food and its authenticity. JMDA designed the winning concept.

Behind a simple umbrella shop lies Fixglove, an amazing bar designed by NC Design & Architecture as a secret society hideout. Guests can access the bar through a discreet doorway at the back of the shop, immersing themselves in a fantasy world inspired by the adventures of an English gentleman. To enter, one must touch a specific umbrella handle.
You can find this unique restaurant in Tehran, Iran. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it has a mysterious and hip look. Inside, you’ll find an industrial décor with tough wall finishes, exposed ceiling beams, wrought iron light fixtures, wooden tables with metal frames, and matching chairs.

The ambiance at Kar & Theo restaurant and bar in New York is unique. Aviva Collective designed the space with reclaimed materials inspired by Southern Europe, creating an eclectic look that combines the old and new. Originally built as a private bath house in 1885, Les Bains gained popularity in the 1970s as a gathering place for celebrities and fashion models, attracting artists such as David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and Mick Jagger. In 2010, the building was deemed unsafe, but a redevelopment project was launched the following year, resulting in the new Les Bains that includes a club and restaurant. This project was undertaken by RDAI.

Here you’re greeted by a homey atmosphere in a space designed by Studio A. The décor is contemporary, vibrant, and full of character and charm. The secret to their success is the ability to offer a unique vibe that keeps people coming back.
Pink Moon Saloon by Sans-Arc Studio – best bar in Australia & the Pacific
Tucked into an alleyway in Adelaide, Australia, the Pink Moon Saloon is situated between two office buildings on a plot that measures only 3.66 x 28 meters. Inside this compact space, Sans-Arc Studio architects have ingeniously integrated a bar with a kitchen and an outdoor courtyard. The interior boasts timber-clad walls and a pitched roof with visible beams, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
