Ark Home: A Drawbridge and Amazing Views
Interesting house designs challenge our assumptions about what is normal. Take, for example, a house accessed by a drawbridge. This unique feature sets it apart from the ordinary.
That’s a feature on Konieczny’s Ark, a private home in Brenna, Poland. The house was designed by KWK Promes, an architecture studio established in 1999 by Robert Konieczny. It designs residential and public buildings with a focus on the interesting and unusual.
The design of this hillside home is reminiscent of a boat, hence its name. Although the overall design and architecture make the house stand out, it’s the little details that give it an edgy and interesting character that we love.
The house doesn’t sit flat on the ground for various reasons. The sloped site and the risk of landslides influenced the architects to design the house this way, prioritizing security.
The house lacks a regular front door, instead being accessed by a drawbridge that serves as a staircase and window shutter. This is one of the most interesting and unique features of the house.
The building slopes and has a solid platform that allows the house to cantilever over the valley. A minimal approach was used in designing the house and the surroundings.
The house can be closed off with shutters when nobody’s home and when privacy and extra insulation is needed. The location is perfect for a holiday home. The panoramic views are amazing and they can be admired from inside through the full-height windows or from decks and terraces concealed by the shutters.
The house’s interior architecture is simple, with large windows that bring the outdoors inside. Keeping the décor neutral creates balance and highlights the contrasts with the surrounding landscape.
The living room, dining space, and kitchen have an open floor plan with a narrow terrace. Sliding glass doors provide access to the terrace, which receives ample natural light, creating a bright and open atmosphere. The functions of each area are visually separated using furniture, area rugs, or accent features.
The bedroom area has access to a glass-encased terrace, making the views an integral part of the interior decor. Simple materials, colors, and finishes are used throughout the house to create a well-balanced, warm, and comfortable environment inspired by nature and the surrounding landscape.
Wood and concrete were used extensively, complementing each other and creating a modern look throughout the house. The bathroom utilizes these materials and their natural beauty in combination with glass partitions and white fixtures.
