Casual Luxury and Sweeping Views Dominate This Wine Country Home
Set on a 140-acre property in California’s Sonoma Valley, this home combines casual relaxation with a focus on nature. With views of the hills and vineyards of this famous wine region, the residence was designed and built to reflect the surrounding landscape. Set under a huge old oak tree, the four-bedroom home features large windows that maximize the views, sun angle, and natural landscape.
Designed by Wade Design Architects in collaboration with Total Concepts and Tim Clarke Interiors, this house beautifully combines the outdoors and indoors. The owners desired an earthy vibe, which is evident in the exterior with its natural stone and stained wood facade that blends with the landscape.
The massive oak tree shades the spacious deck and outdoor kitchen, adjacent to the indoor kitchen for convenience. The outdoor living space is ideal for family dining, yet large enough for a party. The kitchen features an Argentinean grill, wood-burning pizza oven, and a large gas grill.
The dining table is on wheels and can easily roll out of the way for parties or family games on the deck.
This dining room is flooded with natural light, creating a unique atmosphere with sweeping views. A table crafted from a tree on the property takes center stage, made by Made Solid from Los Angeles. The sustainable concept is carried through to the Sol & Luna chairs, wrapped in leather.
Above the table, a Lindsey Adelman fixture hangs, evoking gathering clouds.
The kitchen blends a farmhouse look with modern decor. The shiny backsplash adds a touch of modernity. The acorn-shaped pendants give a nod to the ancient tree in the yard.
These pendants, called Mater Terho, were created by Finnish designer Maija Puoskari, who used nature as inspiration for their organic shape.
The living room is a cozy space with a tall beamed ceiling and skylight. The stone fireplace is the focal point and sets the tone. The walls are painted Ammonite by Farrow & Ball and provide a backdrop for the furnishings, a mix of custom and stock pieces.
The room includes a Holly Hunt coffee table and is anchored by a Turkish Kilim rug from Woven Accents.
The coffered ceilings, fireplace, and incredible view could make it difficult to concentrate in this space! Clean lines take center stage in the room, starting with the oak and leather desk from Lawson Fenning. The stunning wooden ceiling is accentuated by a brass pendant fixture from Urban Electric Co.
In a space flowing from outdoors, seating groups offer a place to enjoy the open air and views. The porch provides shelter from rain or sun, with optional screens that can be rolled up in bug seasons. The furnishings are luxurious yet easy care and casual.
The sectional from Restoration Hardware is upholstered in Sutherland fabric and made from weathered teak. Comfortable lounge chairs are by Gloster with an aged-brass side table from Lawson Fenning. The outdoor rug under the sofa grouping is by Marc Phillips.
One of the bedrooms has sturdy custom bunk beds, great for kids and also accommodating extra adult guests. The deep blue painted fixtures are accented by colorful bedding and a rug.
A custom walnut bed is the centerpiece of the master bedroom, softened by a grasscloth wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries. Vintage bedside tables by Paul Frankl complement the Native American textiles on the bed. Minimalist wall sconces from Circa Lighting and Paul Marra’s hand-woven yarn light fixture add pops of color. The Turkish Kilim area rug from Woven Accents ties the space together.
The master bathroom is clean, uncluttered, and natural.
Outdoor areas designed for outdoor enjoyment are abundant in this property. The rectangular pool is located by a grove of trees and is accompanied by the pool house. Its Sonoma stone construction matches the landscape and creates a cohesive look with the house.
The same stone forms the pool deck, which is paved with organic-shaped stones. For poolside relaxation, teak chaise lounges from Restoration Hardware, upholstered in outdoor fabric by Ralph Lauren, line the pool’s end.
The property’s magic truly comes alive at dusk, highlighting the landscape’s colors and textures near this incredible wine country home.
