Choosing The Right Rug Size for a King Bed
Before investing in an area rug, ensure you have the right size for your king bed. Rugs under king beds are crucial to the room’s focal point. Get the look right by choosing the correct size rug.
Determining the size of your bedroom rug should not be based solely on the size of your bed. Instead, consider factors such as the dimensions of your room, desired room style, budget, bedroom floor type, and other furniture in the room.
Steps for Choosing a Rug Size for a King Bed:
1. Measure your bedroom – Determine the dimensions of your room to find the most suitable size for the king bed rug. Leave a 1-2 foot gap between the rug and the wall. Generally, a large room requires a large rug, while a small room can accommodate a smaller rug.
2. Measure your bed – The standard king-size bed measures 76″ wide and 80″ long. Another variation is the California King bed, which measures 72″ wide and 84″ long. Measure your bed to ensure it aligns with these measurements, as non-standard beds may vary.
Nightstands are important when determining king bed size rug size. Some designers suggest that an area rug should be as wide as the bed and nightstands combined. This is a good rule of thumb for the rug’s width.
Consider other furniture in the room, such as dressers and floor mirrors. Also, think about the seating, including benches at the end of the bed. Including a bench helps determine the rug size.
If budget is a concern, using small rugs on either side of the king bed is a more affordable option.
Rug Placement for a King Bed
In most cases, place a rug perpendicular to the king bed’s orientation. This works best for area rugs with enough space on either side. It doesn’t apply to small bedside rugs or very large area rugs that can be positioned based on the room’s layout.
Placement at the foot of the bed – Runners or animal skin rugs under the foot of the bed add color and style.
King Size Bed Rug Size
When choosing a rug for a king size bed, aim for at least 18-24 inches extending from the sides and foot. This allows ample space to keep your feet cozy and provides clearance around the bed.
Irregular Small Rugs
Irregular shaped rugs are suitable for beds of any size. Large irregular rugs can be positioned at angles from the foot of the bed. Alternatively, place two irregular rugs on either side of the bed to create a landing spot for your feet.
6’x 9’ Rug
A 6’x 9’ rug is the smallest size for a king-sized bed and works well in a small bedroom. Position the rug at the foot of the bed, leaving 18”-24” at the bottom. If you have a bench at the end of the bed, include it on the rug.
A 7-8’x 10’ rug is the minimum size for a king bed if you want to include small nightstands. Pull the rug down toward the foot and away from the nightstand for more rug area at the foot of the bed.
A 9’x 12’ rug is the largest size for a king bed, providing sufficient coverage.
With a 9’x 12’ rug, you can include a king size bed, nightstands, and a bench. This size rug and king bed give you plenty of clearance. An area rug this large will not fit in every bedroom.
Make sure there is still 1-2 feet of wall space after adding a 9’x 12’ rug.
A 10’x 14’ rug for a king bed works well if you are trying to fill a large room. This large rug size can help you define the bed area and make the room more cohesive. Position either perpendicular or parallel to the bed as required.
Runners are less expensive than large area rugs and work well for a tight budget. Place runners on either side of a king bed.
