On a small site in coastal Maine, Whitten Architects built a cabin retreat that blends modern design with rustic influences. The cabin is perched on steel columns, giving it a treehouse-inspired look and preserving the area below, in line with the eco-friendly concept of this project.

The cabin was built using locally-sourced, natural materials, which allows it to blend with the surrounding forest. The windows and openings help to camouflage the building and frame the views, while also letting in natural light.

The U-shaped cabin forms a beautiful courtyard around large trees preserved on the site. The architects preserved the natural surroundings and observed the landscape to create a floor plan that maximizes ocean views visible through the tree gaps. Inside, the cabin has a relaxed and inviting design with white pine and Douglas fir used for flooring, paneling, and custom furniture.

The kitchen island and double-sided fireplace also act as space dividers within the open plan volumes.
