Location is key when building a vacation home, so naturally, the top of a cliff seems like a hard-to-refuse option. Up there, you can rule the world and take in its beauty at once. Cliff houses are amongst the most amazing and inspiring ones.
Concept Cliff House.
This is a concept for a holiday home in Victoria, Australia, designed by modscape. The house is built to hang off a cliff above the ocean, seamlessly blending with the landscape. The carport on the topmost level serves as the entry point, and every room offers impressive ocean views.
Featuring a glass and stone exterior, this artistic house is inspired by Picasso. It’s a contemporary house with curved walls on a cliff near Sydney, Australia. The design is minimalist and impressive.
When planning, Durbach Block Jaggers also included a stunning pool and rooftop garden.
The Tula House, designed by Canadian-based Patkau Architects, is located on a remote island in British Columbia. Perched 44 feet above the beach, it offers uninterrupted waterfront views from a cliff. The house’s design is inspired by the irregular rocky site, allowing it to seamlessly blend in.
Canadian studio MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects designed a modern house that extends over a rocky outcrop in Nova Scotia. The house resembles a wooden box and only a small portion is connected to the ground, the rest suspended on steel beams. It was designed as a weekend getaway and it aims to connect residents with the landscape by inducing a feeling of vertigo.
Somewhere in Alicante, there’s a breathtaking white house extending towards the sea. Designed by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, this Spanish studio envisioned the house as a monolithic structure integrated into the cliff, with the upper floor housing the living rooms and bedrooms, providing panoramic views through a glazed facade.
The Cliff House, known as “The Lake House,” is a project by Mark Dziewulski Architect. Built in 2010, this five-storey house is constructed with steel, concrete, and glass and is located on a waterfront lot overlooking Lake Tahoe in Nevada. The arched volumes and glass facades were designed to capture the breathtaking views throughout the year.

Built on a steep cliff in the south of France, this house composed of volumes that complete each other like a puzzle. It was a project by architect Vincent Coste. The two-storey house offers panoramic sea views and features a large infinity edge pool.
The floor-to-ceiling glass walls seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Till House, built by WMR Arquitectos, is a small weekend retreat situated on a Chilean coastline with cliffs 200 meters high. This secluded location offers breathtaking views on all sides, and the house itself is constructed using square wooden modules and dark brown wall cladding.
Introducing the Cliff Tree House.
Situated north of New York City, this structure was envisioned as a unique tree house. It’s attached to a steep cliff and suspended above ground, sustained by the trees. The house offers sweeping views over the hills and pays tribute to the landscape in an unexpected and inspiring way.

Designed by Fourgeron Architecture, the Fall House is located in Big Sur, California, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The house is anchored in the landscape and embedded within the land. It was designed as a long and narrow volume to maximize the dramatic views.
Casa Once Mujeres is a vacation home in Zapallar, Chile, built on a sloping site near the beach and ocean. The project name signifies it was specifically designed for a couple with 11 daughters. The steep slope allows all three levels to provide stunning views.
The ground level accommodates shared spaces, the middle level holds the bedrooms and two living rooms, and the top floor houses the master bedroom, living room, and dining room.
AIBS House.
Designed by Atelier d’Architecture Bruno Arpicum & Partners (AABE), the AIBS House in Ibiza, Spain is a massive cliffside structure. Large windows and glass walls connect the interior spaces with the stunning surroundings. Adjacent to the building, the architects created an infinity-edge pool that merges with the sky and water.
Set on the cliffside of Muskoka Lakes in Ontario, Canada, this house aims to enhance the scenery with its simplistic design and natural materials. Altius Architecture designed the house to appear as if it is emerging from the cliff by using local granite for its base and exterior. It serves as a tranquil retreat for the owners, allowing them to escape the city and appreciate the surrounding natural beauty.
Kevin Vallely Design constructed the Cliffhanger Residence, a cantilevered home in North Vancouver, Canada. The house is situated on a steep south-facing slope and boasts a clean, simple, and expressive design. Despite the difficult location, the three-story house was successfully built on a small 25 ft by 100 ft plot.
Notably energy-efficient, this beautiful home embodies the modern aesthetic while keeping in harmony with the local surroundings.
