### How to Calculate the Square Footage of a Room for Flooring

The first step in determining the flooring requirements for your room is calculating the square footage. Follow these steps to find the square footage:

1. Measure the room’s length and width using a tape measure.

2. Multiply the length by the width to obtain the square footage.

Once you have the square footage, you can multiply it by the cost per square foot of the flooring. The formula is as follows:

Cost = Total square footage x price per square foot

For instance, if your room measures 12’ x 20’, the total square footage is 240. If the flooring costs $5.47 per square foot, the total cost will be $1,312.80.

For irregular room shapes, use the same process to calculate the square footage of the entire space.

To calculate the square footage of an irregular space, divide the room into sections, measure each, and add the totals together.

1. Sketch your room on paper, dividing it into easy-to-measure squares or rectangles.

2. Measure the length and width of each section, then multiply the numbers together (or use our flooring calculator).

3. Write the square footage of each section on your drawing.

4. Add the square footage of each area together to get the total.

5. Multiply the total room square footage by the cost of the flooring per square foot for an estimated price.

How much waste should you consider when buying flooring?

When purchasing flooring, consider waste. When installing, you’ll cut pieces of flooring, making sections of them unusable. As a general rule, buy 7-15% more flooring than needed.

– For a perfect square room, add a 7% waste factor. Multiply the total square footage by 1.07 to calculate.

– For rectangular rooms, add a 10% waste factor. Multiply the total square footage by 1.10.

– For irregular rooms or when laying flooring in a herringbone or diagonal pattern, add a 15% waste factor. Multiply the total square footage by 1.15.

– How much flooring do I need for 1,000 square feet?

If you have a 1,000-square-foot open floor plan, you need at least 1,000 square feet of flooring, plus 5-15% extra depending on the design and shape of the room. If your home is divided into rooms, measure the square footage of each room and add them together to determine how much flooring you need.

To determine the number of boxes of flooring you need, calculate the room’s square footage and the square footage per box. Then divide the room square footage by the box square footage. For example, if your room is 240 square feet and there are 23.91 square feet of flooring per box, you’ll need 11 boxes.

For a 10’ x 10’ room, calculate the square footage and divide it by the square footage per box.

To determine the required amount of flooring for a 12’ x 15’ room, simply calculate the area. With the dimensions provided, the room covers 180 square feet. For rectangular rooms, it is advisable to account for a 10% waste factor.

Accordingly, you will need 198 square feet of flooring.
