The way we perceive the rooftop of a building is changing as more structures display gardens, terraces, and pools on their roofs. It’s surprising that we didn’t start utilizing this space earlier. Now, it’s important to maximize every feature and function, but for different reasons.

Transitioning from a suburban house to an apartment in a busy city can be difficult, especially when giving up a garden or yard. However, living on the top floor of a building offers the opportunity to create a rooftop garden. The Phoenix Rooftop, a project by Bent Architecture, is a perfect example of this.

Despite the different context, the clients wanted the rooftop to resemble a suburban garden. There are many advantages to having a rooftop garden, which we will discuss later.

The next example is a house in Nha Trang, Vietnam that features a rooftop garden.

Simply wanting a rooftop garden and having the resources may not be enough. The house designed by ICADA and VTN Architects is a perfect example. The local building code specified that around 50% of the house’s roof had to be covered by gray or orange tiles and sloped.

This created problems for the architects and clients who wanted a hanging rooftop garden. To comply with the rules, they divided the roof into parallel bands of alternating green areas and tiles. They also designed it as a terraced garden to create the slope.

This unique penthouse in Beirut spans three floors and stands as an independent structure atop the building. The top level comprises a guest studio, staff quarters, and a pool terrace. In addition, the rooftop design includes two probe-like projections that serve as light fixtures, towering above the surrounding buildings and providing visibility from adjacent neighborhoods.

An apartment with outdoor living space, an outdoor kitchen, or a rooftop garden offers the best of both worlds. It brings suburban house comfort and seamless indoor-outdoor transition to the heart of the city. Surprisingly, these homes exist in New York, specifically at the center of TriBeCa at the 60 White residential complex.

Designed by Bostudio Architecture, these 8 lofts are exquisite.

A tall and narrow house in Brooklyn, US

When choosing between a location and increased living space, the owners of this Brooklyn residence opted for the former. The residence, situated on a narrow and deep plot, initially had two floors that became inadequate as the family expanded. Office of Architecture redesigned the house into a 4-level home to meet the owners’ needs.

They added a new mudroom area under the existing two floors and a bedroom suite with a rooftop terrace on the top level. Tilt Roof House in Yangpyeong-gun, South Korea is another example worth noting.

No matter how you look at this house, it is evident that it was designed with respect for the surroundings and the natural energy flowing through the land. Designed by BCHO Architects, the Tilt Roof House takes advantage of the steep slope and is partially embedded into the land. The roof of the house is tilted and serves as a terrace, with two recessed lounge areas and a courtyard box.

Buildings with rooftop gardens revive the connection between people in dense urban areas and nature. A notable example is a set of five buildings by VTN Architects in the Tan Binh District of Vietnam. These structures have rooftop gardens with trees, essentially giant pots.

Besides reintroducing nature to an area where only 0.25% is green, these trees also help reduce pollution.

Originally a caviar warehouse built in 1884, this residence in Manhattan, New York was redesigned by architect Andrew Franz. He transformed the top floor into a contemporary open plan residence with a rooftop garden. The garden is essentially an interior courtyard with a retractable glass roof, providing a refreshing space to admire the surroundings.
