A porch light draws attention. Passengers in cars and pedestrians alike notice it, including your family and visitors. Replacing an exterior lighting fixture may seem daunting, especially if your house has stucco, brick, rock, siding, or other surfaces.

However, I have a secret to share: installing a porch light is as easy as replacing a light fixture anywhere else. Follow this tutorial for a safe and simple installation process.

Let’s start by recognizing the need for this upgrade. The angles, edges, and parts of this outdated porch lamp are not only a major attraction for cobwebs, but the light itself is also dark and pointy. To achieve the modern porch light of your dreams, you will need wire nuts (if they weren’t included), electrical tape, a screwdriver, a level, and optional needlenose pliers.

…and small. It is necessary and desirable to replace the old porch light with something modern, fresh, proportionate, and simple.

Before doing anything else, flip the breaker to turn off electricity to your porch light. You don’t want any live wires when you’re replacing a light fixture. Once you’ve confirmed that the power to your porch light is off, unscrew the old fixture.

To replace an old fixture with a new one, unscrew the wire nuts and remove the old fixture carefully to avoid it falling. Dispose of the old fixture properly, whether by recycling, donating, or throwing it away, depending on its condition.

Porch lights often accumulate leaves, spiderwebs, and other outdoor debris in the outlet box. Clean it out.

Remove the old mounting plate, unless you want to reuse it, if it fits with your new light fixture.

For porch lights, the mounting plate is usually square with a perpendicular lip on one end and an angled lip on the opposite end. Position the angled lip downward and thread the house wires through the center of the mounting plate.

Install the mounting plate over your outlet box, but don’t tighten it all the way yet.

Check the level; adjust the plate as necessary, then tighten it while holding the level to ensure a level mount.

Attach wires from the house to the light fixture. Unite the white house wire with the white fixture wire. Do the same for the black house and fixture wires.

Note that the wires themselves aren’t generally different colors; rather, the “white” and “black” refers to the insulating wire coating. Attach the house ground wire with the fixture ground wire. Screw wire nuts onto the wire pairs.

Bend the house ground wire (attached to the fixture ground wire) to fit under the mounting plate’s green ground screw. Tighten the green screw to secure it.

Wrap electrical tape around the wire nuts and wires to secure, insulate, and protect them.

Now is a great time to screw in your lightbulb(s) as you’re almost ready to mount the porch light on the wall.

Mount the wall plate by angling its bottom edge under the angled lip of the mounting plate. The tip of the long screw should catch under the lip, but don’t tighten it yet.

To securely attach the wall plate, place the long screw beneath the angled lip and push the top edge of the plate over the flat lip of the mounting plate. Leave the short screw on the top edge slightly loose. Tighten the short screw around 80% and the long screw around 50%.

Finally, tighten the short screw fully and do the same with the long screw, keeping in mind that it may not go in all the way due to the angled lip on the mounting plate.

Go flip the breaker back, and turn on your new porch light. Ta da! It’s fantastic!
