Top 10 Unusual Homes Around The World
When it comes to dream homes, everyone has their own unique vision. Some opt for a classic and simple design, while others go for something more adventurous. This diversity has given rise to some truly intriguing and unconventional homes. Here are a few notable examples:
The World’s Skinniest House.
We’ll begin with the world’s slimmest home, the Keret House, which serves as an artist’s residence. The artist stays here part-time due to the limited size and structure of the space. The architect devoted three years to this project and finds it fascinating, taking inspiration from the concise storytelling of Israeli writer Etgar Keret.
The Keret House is a narrow space between two buildings. It connects the buildings while remaining independent from them. Despite its size being a problem and obstacle, it feels airy and spacious due to several solutions.
The transparent roof allows natural light in and prevents the space from feeling cluttered and claustrophobic.
The house has an open stairway and a wall of windows. To preserve the neighborhood’s structure, the house was built ten feet above the ground. Standing 30 feet tall, it holds the unofficial title of the world’s slimmest house.
Other similarly categorized structures also exist.
We go from small to large. If the Keret House impressed with its narrowness, this space impresses with its spaciousness. It’s a very large and spacious residence, and although the photos might show it as a normal space, you have to imagine that everything you see is on a much larger scale to fully understand the proportions.
This space was once a warehouse, now converted into a private residence. Located in Soma, near San Francisco, California, it has an intriguing design. The exterior is simple and classical, but it’s the interior that impresses.
Upon entering, a large and open space is revealed, where nature seamlessly integrates into the design.
The living room is the central space where furniture is organized along the walls, leaving the center open. The décor is interesting, with a complex combination of diverse elements, yet the atmosphere is pleasant and cohesive. The overall décor is modern and simple.
Skate house.
Next on our list are two intriguing homes with a similar concept. Each person has their own passions and ideas that they want to explore. For the owners of these homes, their passion is skateboarding, so they wanted the spaces to reflect that. The first home is the PAS House, designed as a continuous skateable space, resembling a ribbon.
The PAS House was created by Gil Lebon Delapointe and architect Francois Perrin.
Situated on a cliff in Malibu, this house provides privacy and allows the owner to fully enjoy it. Additionally, the house offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The internal structure is simple, including a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and skateboard practice area.
The central portion of the house is a 10-foot diameter loop designed for practice, entertainment, and potentially as a second living room with added furniture. It combines the owner’s passion for skateboarding with the coziness of a home.
The second house we mentioned is Skate Villa. The name is quite suggestive. In this project, the plan and strategy differed.
Instead of confining the practice area to a loop or a delimited space, the entire house is skateable.
The concept is intriguing. The house offers comfort and all the features of a regular home, but it has been modified to be skateable. Concrete mounds were added at the base of the walls and straight lines were transformed into curves. Ramps were also integrated into various areas of the house, including one on the fireplace.
These modifications were expertly designed by professional skater Philipp Schuster.
He wanted this place to feel like home and reflect his personality and passion for skating. He purchased the house from an elderly couple and decided to renovate and transform it. However, some original features were preserved to maintain its charm, including the dark wood features, hunting trophies, and traditional furniture.
Epu house.
The next project on our list is a unique house called Epu. Built on a 7′ x 14′ utility trailer, it has all the elements of a regular home, including a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. The only difference is the design and layout.
The living room features a built-in desk and large windows on all sides. It even has a fireplace, which is unexpected in such a small space. The kitchen is also small, with a sink, a 2 burner stove top, a refrigerator, and ample storage space on the shelves. Under the sink, there’s a water heater.
Due to the room’s size, there’s no space for a dishwasher, but the adjacent space to the living room, serving as a closet, can accommodate one.
The bedroom fits a queen-sized bed. The shelving can store clothes, but there’s little room for other furniture. The bathroom is tiny with only a shower.
Hot water is provided by a device under the kitchen sink, but it only lasts about 5 minutes.
Amazing tree house.
A house, regardless of size or design, can vary in uniqueness. Some designs are truly extraordinary, almost too unbelievable. One such example is this house created by Frank Lloyd Wright in Portland, Oregon.
It beautifully embodies and honors its natural surroundings.
The house was designed by architect Robert Harvey Oshatz. The client had challenging requests: seamlessly integrating the house into the landscape and making it a physical representation of music. These details dictated the entire design as the architect utilized the structure of the site.
The lot had a steep slope, and the house was built there, positioning the main floor at tree canopy level. The design incorporates walls of grass and organic shapes to blend with the landscape. The walls, ceilings, and floors are natural wood, complemented by natural stone.
The architect spent several years to achieve these stunning results.
I love riding trains, especially long trips when the train’s gentle movements lull me to sleep. In those moments, I impulsively want to make the train my home. However, some take this inspiration to another level.
In Portland, there is a train that has been converted into a home.
The 807 square foot space was completely transformed and redesigned into a cozy home with living, sleeping, bathroom, and kitchen areas. Despite its strange shape and challenging dimensions, the modern interior doesn’t feel cluttered or tiny; it’s airy and bright.
Among the modern features in the design, we have the full electric kitchen and the incinerator toilet. The design is interesting and the transformation is spectacular. Another interesting detail about this home is that, since it’s not considered real estate, there are no property taxes.
The train home is currently listed at $225,000.
Remember those tiny crabs that borrow shells? Have you ever imagined living in a seashell? Probably not, since it’s a crazy idea. Well, some people don’t agree.
Just look at this home. It’s a house inspired by a spiral shell. The shape and design are unusual and suggestive.
But that’s not the only connection this house has with nature.
The house was built with a combination of natural and inorganic materials, including local seashells and regional coral. The walls are curved with no corners. Making it even more interesting, the house is located on a beach of a southern island, highlighting the resemblance to a spiral shell.
This unique home was built for artist Octavio Ocampo, blending art and functional design. The spiked roof serves as a decorative element, while the second-story deck has a functional purpose. The design is fluid and gracious, with the only interruption being the windows and doors.
Curved Spiral Shell House Design.
Although the house we’ve just presented is unique, it’s not the only one inspired by seashells. Other homes were also based on this concept. One of them is this beautiful house, designed by Senosiain Arquitectos, patterned after a shell.
The house was built with steel wire and thick concrete, resulting in a strong and durable structure. Despite its curved and gracious lines, it was designed to last. It’s also low-maintenance, which adds to its stunning exterior design featuring only curved lines and shapes.
The elements inside the house are also found outside, giving it a cohesive feel. The interior is adorned with plants and organic patterns. The stone paths and other details blur the line between indoors and outdoors.
The house is modern, cozy, and uniquely designed. It serves as a fully-functional and remarkable living space.
All homes are divided into different spaces, each serving distinct functions and following independent designs. However, they also maintain an overall continuous design as part of the same space and structure. But what if they didn’t?
The house might then look like this.
This unique structure was designed and built by Make Architects. There are several interesting aspects related to this house. Firstly, it is an underground home.
Additionally, the design and layout are noteworthy. The rooms are organized around a central kitchen and each resemble a petal, forming a flower shape.
The house impresses on multiple levels. It’s stunning architecturally and also low-maintenance and eco-friendly. It was built with locally-sourced materials and traditional methods. It was built into the hillside and seamlessly disappears into the landscape.
From above, it resembles a flower with rooms. At night, it has a glowing floral impression on the landscape, adding to its appeal.
