After clients moved to a remote part of South Africa, studio Nadine Engelbrecht Architect was tasked with designing and building a small stone and concrete house off the grid.

The client spent some time building an access road to the remote site before the project started. They chose this place to simplify their life as a family and enjoy a healthier lifestyle with fresh air and clean water.

The project had a limited budget, which motivated the architects to design a small and practical house. It occupies a mere 86 square meters, yet offers a spacious living area of 120 square meters. To maximize space, loft bedrooms were integrated and the common areas were consolidated into a single, open ground floor.

The budget constraints led the architects to incorporate reclaimed elements into their design, including old steel windows. They also used raw materials like concrete for the floors and walls, as well as stones collected on site for some of the walls. These serve as rock-climbing walls, a shared passion of the owners.
