Sometimes, architects face limitations when building and designing projects. However, these limitations can also be a source of inspiration and push the design in new and exciting directions. The Cube Hotel, completed in 2020 by studio SU Architects, is a prime example of this.

Located in Huzhou, China, Megan Mountain International Tourism Resort features a unique architectural design. With a height limit of 12 meters and a footprint not exceeding 140 square meters, the team embraced a geometric cube concept to maximize the limited space. This innovative approach resulted in a flawless outcome.

The team chose the Rubik’s cube as inspiration for the hotel’s design. The building has three floors, each with three floor-to-ceiling windows on each side. The black frame creates the Rubik’s cube structure. Different types of glass were used for the square windows, offering varying degrees of exposure and privacy. Some windows are transparent, providing panoramic views, while others use U-shaped glass or glass bricks for added privacy.

The first floor houses the common areas and reception, while the upper floors have six guest bedroom suites.
